MOVING TIPS
At Marathon Moving Services, our goal is to make your move as stress free and easy as it should be. Here are some moving tips you can take note of for your next move.
General Packing Guidelines
Tip #1
Avoid using small, tedious boxes. Use full-size moving boxes to make packing and stacking easier.
Tip #2
Seal all boxes on both the top and bottom with tape to prevent items from falling out.
Tip #3
Make sure everything that can fit in a box is boxed. When movers only handle furniture and boxes, your move goes much more smoothly!
Fragile & Specialty Items
Tip #4
Wrap pictures and box them by size. Be sure to seal the boxes securely.
Tip #5
Pack TVs and monitors before movers arrive. Movers are not liable for damage to unboxed televisions.
Tip #6
Pack lampshades together in a sealed box — they’re too fragile to move alone. Need supplies? Our Virginia Beach movers can provide packing materials.
Tip #7
Remove pendulums from clocks or secure them tightly to the base. Wrap and pack smaller clocks in boxes.
Tip #8
Pack all fragile items separately and secure them in durable boxes.
Tip #9
Movers cannot move pictures, lamps, computers, or stereo equipment unless they are properly boxed.
Clothing & Household Items
Tip #10
Pack books tightly in small boxes — they’re heavy and can break larger boxes.
Tip #11
Clothing may stay in small dresser drawers.
Empty medium and large dressers.
Hanging clothes should go in wardrobe boxes.
Movers cannot move clothing unless it’s boxed or bagged.
Appliances & Electronics
Tip #12
Empty refrigerators and freezers before moving — remove food, shelves, pans, and trays.
Tip #13
Disconnect washers and dryers in advance. Movers do not assemble or disassemble appliances.
Pack any loose parts separately and keep them somewhere you’ll remember.
Tools, Equipment & Hazardous Items
Tip #14
Drain all oils and gas from lawn mowers and other gas-powered tools.
Movers will not transport flammable or hazardous materials such as:
- Aerosol cans
- Paints or thinners
- Guns or ammunition
- Any chemicals considered hazardous.
Valuables & Personal Items
Tip #15
Keep all valuables — including jewelry, watches, money, artwork, and legal documents — in your personal possession. These should be moved by the owner only.
Furniture & Large Items
Tip #16
If possible, disassemble beds, tables, and large furniture before movers arrive. This saves time and speeds up the process.
Tip #17
Create a designated “Do Not Move” area for items and furniture you plan to leave behind or handle yourself.

After doing an extensive search for local movers and comparison shopping with other companies, Marathon Movers stood out to me for their reviews. Before I found them, I had given up and was going to settle for another mover that was overpriced but was available for the date I needed. Once I talked to Brian at Marathon Movers, I knew they were a better fit for me. He answered all of my questions, was upfront and transparent about the pricing and the process of my moving day. I was so relieved and immediately cancelled my other reservations with the other company. When moving day came, Milton, Chuck and Jaylen arrived early, did a quick walk through and Milton (lead mover) let me know what they were going to do and a guesstimate how long it should take. When I say these young men, moved strategically and quickly but carefully is an understatement. They exceeded my expectations. There was no damage to my furniture, and no damage to the apartment or my house. They managed to move me under the agreed time. I would definitely hire Marathon Movers again and will recommend them to anyone.

Very professional and experienced. I have used the major movers in the area and Marathon Movers blows the out of the water. I had a great experience employing Marathon Moving Services for the move of a 1-bedroom apartment from Chesapeake to Virginia Beach. I spoke with Milton on the phone and he explained the process in detail.The movers, Willis & Vaughn, were on time, pleasant and capable. Huge shoutout to Marathon Movers LLC for absolutely crushing our move — in the rain, no less.Not only did nothing get damaged… I swear my furniture looks cleaner and sturdier than when it left the old place. I don’t know what kind of magic was involved, but I respect it.They moved fast without being reckless, didn’t complain once about the weather, and handled heavy pieces like it was leg day at the gym.Moving is usually stressful. This… was weirdly smooth. Highly recommend if you want professionals who know what they’re doing but still keep the energy positive.10/10 would use them again to move.

Marathon did a great job unloading a pod for me and worked around an issue with pod access. They moved the time they would show up on the day and did a great job. The gentlemen moving our furniture were courteous and extremely helpful. I would highly recommend this business and would use them again in a heart beat.

Second time moving with marathon and they have been excellent both times. They were very careful with all our items that could be damaged and were extra quick to boot. Moved my 3 bedroom house in Norfolk to Portsmouth in under 5 hours. I'm not using anyone else as long as im in Hampton Roads.
